Every time I think of receiving an AM in the Australia Day Awards, I keep having to pinch myself and make sure that I am not dreaming.
I reflect on the luck that I have had in meeting great mentors throughout my career. And not only those older, but also many younger colleagues whose attitude motivated
and influenced my own attitude towards life.
Then I reflect on the families involved and how lucky I am with great not so young children, who all in their own right are successful and that includes a wonderful extended family who are also shining examples of just good people.
I also find it difficult to understand how someone can be given such an honour emanating from a working life that was a lifelong hobby. Attempting to explain my feelings is enormously difficult and to understand what I did to be rewarded with an AM. Afterall All I did is what any professional should do and many do even better.
But to sum up, all I ever did in those years of working in many roles as an apprentice, commis on the pans. sous and chef de cuisine, teacher, educational administrator and owner operator of a small foodie business that I have loved every moment. But to be rewarded alongside the thousands of others who have better skills, attitude, knowledge and experience bewilders me, Notwithstanding I say ; Thank you to the mentors the whole family the many friends.
I have always found delight in helping others, and this recognition suggests that perhaps I may have succeeded in some way and thrilled that someone thought that I was a worthy candidate to be considered for this great honour and last but not least I thank my guardian angel who made sure that in many instances I was in the right place at the right time.
